THE PROMISED COMFORTER
Films
Spiritism on screen — the biographies and adaptations that brought the doctrine’s stories of life after death and reincarnation to millions of moviegoers.
Brazil took Spiritism to the cinema as no other country has: prestige biographies of its great figures and big-screen adaptations of its best-loved books, several of them among the most-watched Brazilian films of their years. Below are the essential titles — what each one is, who made it, and, where we could verify it, how to watch it in the United States today.
Every film here began as a book — find them all on our Books page. All of these films are in Portuguese; where a current US streaming option exists, it is noted on the card.
The essential Spiritist films
Two journeys into the spirit world, four lives that changed a country’s faith, and one story built directly on The Spirits’ Book.
Astral City: A Spiritual Journey
The adaptation of Chico Xavier’s best-known book. Physician André Luiz (Renato Prieto) dies, wakes in the desolate Umbral, and is rescued to the spirit colony Nosso Lar — “Our Home” — where he must learn, through work, study and humility, what his earthly life was really for. One of the biggest productions in Brazilian cinema history, it drew more than four million people to theaters in Brazil. Read the story of the book and the film on our Astral City page.
Where to watch (US): free on Hoopla; streaming via Prime Video channels; rent or buy on Amazon Video and Apple TV — current options on JustWatch →
Astral City 2: The Messengers
Fourteen years later, André Luiz returns — this time as one of the messengers. A group of spirits led by Aniceto travels to Earth to help three protégés whose life missions are on the verge of failing, in a story adapted from The Messengers (1944). Renato Prieto reprises the role of André Luiz, with Edson Celulari as Aniceto.
Chico Xavier
Released on the centenary of his birth, this biopic follows Chico Xavier at three ages — played by Matheus Costa, Ângelo Antônio and Nelson Xavier — from a frightened boy in Minas Gerais who saw spirits, to the humble medium whose psychographed letters consoled thousands of grieving families. Based on Marcel Souto Maior’s biography As Vidas de Chico Xavier, it was the surprise hit of the Brazilian cinema season of 2010. Meet him on our Chico Xavier biography page.
Kardec
Paris, 1850s. Respected educator Léon Rivail (Leonardo Medeiros) attends a séance out of professional skepticism — and leaves convinced there is something to investigate. Under the pen name Allan Kardec he questions, compares and systematizes the communications, and publishes The Spirits’ Book against the hostility of Church and press. Based on Marcel Souto Maior’s biography Kardec — A Biografia, from the director of Astral City. Meet him on our Allan Kardec biography page.
Bezerra de Menezes: The Diary of a Spirit
The first of the modern Spiritist biopics tells the story of Adolfo Bezerra de Menezes (Carlos Vereza): a young medical student from Ceará who became an abolitionist congressman in Rio de Janeiro — and then gave his practice and his reputation to the poor who queued at his door, earning the name “doctor of the poor” and becoming a founding figure of Brazilian Spiritism. Meet him on our Bezerra de Menezes biography page.
The Mothers of Chico Xavier
Inspired by real stories from the medium’s life. Three women at painful crossroads — Ruth, whose teenage son is in trouble with drugs; Elisa, who pours into her little son Theo all the attention her absent husband does not; and Lara, a teacher facing an unplanned pregnancy — seek comfort with Chico Xavier, while a reporter insists on interviewing the medium, even without being prepared for what he will find. Nelson Xavier returns as Chico.
Divaldo: The Messenger of Peace
The life of Divaldo Franco in three stages — childhood, youth and adulthood — with Bruno Garcia as the adult Divaldo. A boy in Feira de Santana who sees spirits grows, guided by his spiritual mentor Joanna de Ângelis, into the medium and speaker who would found the Mansão do Caminho charity in Salvador and carry a message of consolation around the world. Based on the biography Divaldo Franco, by Ana Landin. Meet him on our Divaldo Franco biography page.
The Film of the Spirits
Bruno Alves is forty when his world collapses: his wife dies, he loses his job, and despair closes in. Then a stranger hands him a book — The Spirits’ Book — and Bruno begins a search through Kardec’s questions about death, suffering and the continuity of life. A gentle drama built directly on the first book of the Codification, released in October 2011, the month of Kardec’s birthday. Find the book on our Books page.
